TORONTO, ONTARIO – Hart House Theatre is proud to present Shakespeare’s magical comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream running from November 20th until December 5th, 2009.

By far the sexiest of Shakespeare’s plays, A Midsummer Night’s Dream depicts the multiple trysts and high-jinx of lovers as they meet in a forest over-run with fairies.  While the fairies taunt and titillate the lovers, a group of well-meaning, but talentless commoners rehearse a play “Intended for great Theseus’ nuptial day” (III, ii).

Under the direction of Jeremy Hutton (Director of King Lear and Arcadia last season) the show is sure to be high-energy, full of tongue-in-cheek humour that will tease and thrill Hart House Theatre audiences.

The chosen setting is early 20th century England where stiff manners and structured etiquette conceal true emotions and desires.  When the lovers escape this dreary place to find true love in the woods, they are met by a Bacchanal, free-feeling troupe of gypsies (the fairies) who are full of colour, vibrancy and vigorous dancing.  As the story unfolds, the city dwellers become immersed in the spirit of the gypsy fairies and bring that colour, vibrancy and dancing back into their own world.
