Press Release: Canadians Can Nominate Favourites for Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards

From press release

NOMINATION DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 23

Ottawa, September 14, 2011 – Canadians are encouraged to nominate their favourite Canadian performing artists for the prestigious Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards (GGPAA). Nominations for these Awards – presented for lifetime artistic achievement in the fields of broadcasting, classical music, dance, film, popular music, and theatre as well as for voluntarism in the performing arts – can be made online at http://www.ggpaa.ca/en/nomination.html until September 23, 2011.

All Canadians can have a say in who will be in the running for the Awards. By simply submitting a nomination, including a letter of support and a short biography of their favourite artist, they can influence who will be honoured with a GGPAA in 2012, which marks the 20th anniversary of the GGPAA.

All nominations will be reviewed by a jury of experts in each discipline who will make recommendations of the top candidates received through the public nomination process. The GGPAA Board of Directors makes the final selection of recipients, with six chosen for lifetime artistic achievement and one for the Ramon John Hnatyshyn Award for Voluntarism in the Performing Arts.

The laureates will be announced in the spring and celebrated at a series of events in Ottawa in May, culminating in a spectacular Gala at Canada’s National Arts Centre on May 5, 2012.

The GGPAA are Canada’s foremost distinction for excellence in the performing arts. Since their inception in 1992, more than 170 outstanding Canadians have received this award. Past recipients include, among many others, Bryan Adams, Robert Lepage, Karen Kain, Yvon Deschamps and Buffy Sainte-Marie.
