Lin Young is a PhD candidate in the English Department at Queen’s University by day, an insatiable theatre-goer by night. She truly loves seeing innovative indie theatre, the strange sort of hole-in-the-wall shows that big companies would never take a risk on. She’s seen plays in basements, gardens, bars, and in old dilapidated houses, to name a few. She’s always on the lookout for the next theatrical experiment in the city, and loves seeing shows that have some quality of fantasy, historicity, or strangeness to them – especially if they involve puppets! The Last Five Years, a musical about love lost plays at the Isabel Bader Theatre in Toronto
I’m a big fan of the musical The Last Five Years, Jason Robert Brown’s complex and emotional roller-coaster ride through five years in the lives of two lovers, whose doomed relationship is told two ways. Specifically, he tells the story chronologically while she tells it backwards, allowing for them to meet only once in the very middle. It’s a good pick for the Toronto Summer Music Festival to put on at the Isabel Bader Theatre, as the score can really live and die based on how adept its leads are at carrying a vast range of weighty emotion.
Thankfully, this production more than does justice to the material.

Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors takes to the al fresco stage at Toronto’s High Park ampitheatre
There’s something inherently cool about watching a play as the sun goes down and the stars come up. Even better when the play in question—in this case, Canadian Stage’s Comedy of Errors, one half of this year’s Shakespeare in High Park lineup—takes place over the course of a single day. It’s almost like you’re seeing time progress alongside the characters, which is an unexpected perk of seeing this particular play performed outdoors.
As we pass through the second half of the Toronto Fringe Festival, we’re seeing more sold-out shows as showtimes dwindle and options decrease. We’ve reviewed every show in this year’s festival to help you decide what to see in the time you’ve got left, but we’ve also got you covered for five more shows–our last five of this year’s Fringe!
Either way, it couldn’t be easier to enter! Until July 10th, we’ll be giving out tickets to 5 shows. You can enter each of the five contests by sending us an email (more details below).
Remember, you need to enter each contest individually. If we pick your name, you’ve got two tickets heading your way, so watch out for that confirmation e-mail!
Here are the 5 shows playing on Friday, July 10th, after the jump.
