Toronto’s Soulpepper Theatre stages Pulitzer-winning show, You Can’t Take it With You
The thing I like most about Soulpepper shows is how real they feel. The attention to detail is remarkable and the sets, the costumes, the characters all seem so well developed, that for a moment, it’s like you walked into their world instead of being an audience member at a put-on show.
You Can’t Take It With You has a fairly simple plot and may not be the most original storyline for our time but it’s a classic tale about a charming young woman who is dating her prim and proper boss’s son. She is terrified about her completely eccentric family meeting her potential in-laws for the first time.
Buddies in Bad Times is pleased to announce a season of new queer Canadian theatre. It is a season that empowers the individual as an agent of social change. It is a season that gives voice to perspectives that would otherwise not be heard. It is a season of deeply personal stories that challenge our assumptions around sexuality, gender, culture, nationhood, class, and race from some of our country’s most venerated artists and a few fresh voices. It is a season that reaffirms Buddies as an important source of solidarity and understanding for our city. This week’s cheap theatre post has a musical theme. All shows feature music or dance or a bit of both. There is a comedic opera, a romantic gay musical, a period piece, a Tennessee Williams play and even a free contemporary dance show.
