A Group of Young Artists Confront Their Grief and Fears around Adulthood in the Darkly Humorous “An Orchid and Other Such Lilies and Lies”

Feeling themselves age and their time shorten, a pair of elderly men drive off into the middle of the desert to do an exorbitant number of drugs and go out with a bang. During their last hurrah, they reminisce on their lives together, filling in the gaps of each other’s memories and creating a colourful tapestry of fact, fiction, light, and loss.

An Orchid and Other Such Lilies and Lies has undergone many transformations, as Daniel Halpern wrote numerous versions of the play to reflect his own tumultuous relationship with aging and grief in different stages of bereavement.

The show is produced by the BodyCube Arts Collective, whose members have produced works in New York, Germany, Toronto, and Nova Scotia.

CRINGE FEST: ADOLESCENT ANSWERING MACHINE ARCHIVE MADE PUBLIC

AFTER THE BEEP at the TORONTO FRINGE FESTIVAL

Victoria, BC (June 10, 2019) – Pamela found cassettes from the answering machine she had as a teenager in the 1990s. Instead of a ritual burning, she’s sharing this archive of adolescence in After the Beep – her one-person cringe fest. Part confessional, part show-and-tell, it’s Watergate Tapes meets The Breakfast Club. It’s a show for anyone who was ever a teenager or had an answering machine.

Yes, she had to contact everybody whose voice is now in the show and yes, it was awkward.

Pamela Bethel is based in Victoria, BC where the show premiered at UNO Fest in 2017. It has since played at the Victoria Fringe (2017) Winnipeg Fringe, Nanaimo Fringe (2018). This year After the Beep plays the Toronto Fringe and Vancouver Fringe.

TORONTO GROWN COMEDY DUO RETURNS FROM NYC!
Comedy Records Presents: Jay & Eytan

Jay & Eytan are a New York based professional comedy duo, originally from Toronto. They showcase a perfect blend of sketch and stand up comedy in their one hour headlining act – packed with energy, countless punchy premises, and just the right amount of spice. From quick off beat impressions, to honest & relatable stand up, to fully choreographed musical numbers, they go right for the jugular when it comes to the laughs.

Jay & Eytan met at the Humber College Comedy Program in 2004 and trained under SNL & SCTV alumni, Joe Flaherty & Robin Duke. They have since been performing sketch comedy together at The Second City in Toronto, The PIT, Upright Citizens Brigade, and New York Comedy Club, honing their craft and building an undeniable chemistry. Because Jay & Eytan mainly work their sketch material in stand-up clubs, they’ve developed a stand-up comic’s approach to sketch comedy, bringing stand-up jokes to life, and filling sketches with punchlines.

Jay Wells L’Ecuyer & Eytan Millstone are the creators, directors and stars of the show. They’ve written & performed live sketch with Canadian greats Colin Mochrie & Scott Thompson, have had two sketch comedy albums reach #1 on the iTunes Canada Comedy charts, and their web series, “Jay & Eytan”, has won multiple awards at the New York No Limits Film Festival, The New York Short Film Festival, and the Portland Comedy Film Festival. They have had sketches featured on the front page of Funny or Die, College Humor, as well as multiple features on The Comedy Network, MTV, and E-Talk.

OMEN: THE MUSICAL – RAD, RADIOACTIVE & RELEVANT

Omen is a new, original musical with book, music and lyrics by Evelyn Long and Marley Kajan. Set in a post-apocalyptic, dystopian future, Omen follows a group of young witches who band together to prevent the Earth from teetering towards another disaster after detecting some mysterious human activity. The show features an original score of Pop, Rock and R&B inspired music played onstage by actors who double as the band. It’s rad, radioactive and relevant.

Omen has been developed by Long and Kajan’s company The Creation Coffin which focuses on feminist, female-driven work that experiments with the form of musical theatre. Both orthodox and unorthodox processes were utilized in the show’s creation, from soundscaping music to building a world in the style of RPG Lore to creating design elements from exclusively recycled objects. Musically, the show takes from a variety of influences including musicals like Hadestown and Spring Awakening, as well as artists like Rihanna, Laura Marling, Alabama Shakes, Panic! At the Disco, Paramore and East-Coast folk music.

In addition to creating the piece, Evelyn Long will be directing while Marley Kajan will be performing. The show also stars award-winning actor/improviser Kat Letwin (Featherweight, Dance Animal, Chasse Galerie), Rosie Callaghan (BroadwayWorld winner for In the Wings’ HAIR) and Teaghan Young (YTV’s The Next Star). Creation Coffin regular, Rachel Cvecich also performs and makes her debut as choreographer. Rounding out the cast as both band and ensemble members are Joy Mwandemange, Andrew Eldridge and Christian Hodge.

Omen explores perhaps the single most urgent crisis facing today’s world: Climate Change. And it does so primarily through young, female voices who offer a diversity of perspectives as our witches and humans of a future dystopia. “Moments away from total collapse. Seconds away from midnight. This is your final omen.”
