Coming to Toronto Fringe 2008: Grandpa Sol and Grandma Rosie

Grandpa Sol and Grandma Rosie

Australia’s own Lana Schwarcz is coming to Toronto Fringe Festival armed with 6 life-size puppets and a unit full of talking dentures. Performed and created by 2008 RAW Comedy Semi Finalist and award winning performer, Grandpa Sol is a truly unique solo show in the 2009 CAFF Touring Lottery.

To overcome her fear of aging, Nurse Jackie begins work at an aged care facility lest she faints when she looks in the mirror to find wrinkles, jowls and a beard. Here, she discovers love in the most unlikely of places and that there is far more to aging than getting old.

Comic, real, and poignant, this unusualpuppet  show mixes unique verbatim testimony from an aged care facility with puppetry and character comedy. It openly challenges our perceptions that one should never mix reality with fiction, that comedy can’t be serious, and that the taboo topics of the less appealing parts of aging should never be mentioned in polite company.

As the show is highly visual, the puppets create fabulous photo opportunities, which have been happily exploited in Australian media and we encourage that tradition to continue in Canada.

A surprise hit at festivals around Australia – who would have thought a puppet show about aging could be so entertaining?
