Comic, poet and reformed psychiatric nurse, Rob Gee presents a user-friendly guide to losing the plot with “FRUITCAKE – Ten Commandments from the Psych Ward“.

Fruitcake charts a night shift on an acute psychiatric ward, seen through the eyes of a nurse who hears the voice of God. In this case, God is a kindly Jamaican woman – acclaimed dub poet Jean Binta Breeze.

Its creator, Rob Gee spent eleven years working as a registered nurse in psychiatric units around the U.K and Australia. Specialising in acute psychiatry, he has also worked with drug users, people with eating disorders, adolescents and the elderly.

Now a full-time comedian and poet, Rob has clocked up over two thousand shows, supported playwright Harold Pinter, and won poetry slams in England, Scotland and Canada. Last summer, Fruitcake received Best of Fest at the Winnipeg Fringe and sold out every show at the Edmonton Fringe. It then entered the Victoria Fringe as a late addition and sold out, despite not being in the brochure.

Rob left nursing four years ago and says he thoroughly enjoyed looking back at his old career with fresh eyes: “The subject of what does and doesn’t make you mentally ill is quite a meaty one, as well as who gets to make the decision about whether you’re insane or not. Plus, I thought it would be funny.”
