“The Whores” walk the streets of the Toronto Fringe
TORONTO, Ontario (May 10th, 2010) – The 2010 Toronto Fringe Festival will feature Fishstick Productions’ presentation of Charles Crosby’s daring exposé of the world’s oldest profession.
Told as interwoven interviews with five sex workers, The Whores evoke the intense and raw emotions born of uncut, unflinching testimonials. Each character takes the audience on a personal tour of her own experiences and perspectives on life as a prostitute. The intimate dialogue neither glosses over nor pulls punches about a profession that provides both freedom and danger to its denizens. Crosby’s rich dialogue gives each character a unique voice reflecting the sector of the profession that she represents.
Based on his interviews with real Halifax sex workers, Crosby introduces us to an upscale escort, an aging streetwalker, a manic hypersexual, a university student, and a drug-addicted single mother. Without resorting to stereotypes or cheap hyperbole, Crosby’s play develops unique characters representing different levels of a strangely hierarchical industry.
FishStick Productions, a vibrant and exciting new theatre company, presents The Whores to both the Toronto and Hamilton Fringe audiences. Produced by Hayley Fisher and directed by Fringe veteran Tanisha Taitt, The Whores features stunning performances by Clare Blackwood, Hayley Fisher, Sarah Illiatovitch-Goldman, Jennifer Kenneally and Joanne Williams.
The seven Toronto performances (dates and times below) will be held at the George Ignatieff Theatre at 15 Devonshire Place (south of Bloor). Advance tickets can be purchased for $11 by phone at 416 966-1062, online at www.fringetoronto.com and in person at the advance ticket box office June 30 – July 11, noon – 8 pm.
