The Go Two Company‘s Under Analyse Me is a dance show that reflects on the ways we communicate with each other in an age when the tools of dialogue are as ubiquitous as they are complex and fallible.
I don’t have too much experience with dance or dance shows, so I was ready to do some squirming in my seat. Despite that, I was engaged from the start, and continued to be so throughout the 50 minute show. In fact, I was actually surprised when it was over.
I feel that a dance performance should communicate emotion and tell us a story through the movement – movement without motivation, without a story behind it, no matter how interesting the dance, is merely a technical exercise.
In Under Analyse Me every one of the vignettes clearly tells a story entertainingly and interestingly with moments of pathos and of comedy. Lacking any real dance terms in my vocabulary, I can only describe the pieces as kinetic, creative, varied and original.
Choreographed and danced by Aria Evans and Candice Irwin, Under Analyse Me did have a few moments of dialogue to punctuate and introduce the dance pieces, which I thought weren’t necessary and just interrupted the rhythm; a minor quibble for an otherwise very enjoyable production.
Under Analyse Me is playing at the Helen Gardiner Phelan Playhouse. There are still a couple performances that you can catch, and it’s highly recommended that you do:
