No Time for Dreams – Toronto Fringe 2011 Press Release

From press release

No Time for Dreams – What if you met a Salesman who sold happiness?

No Time for Dreams began as an exploration of the pursuit of happiness. What happens when a salesman arrives at your door and offers to fulfill all of your wants and desires? What happens when you don’t know what you want? In a series of memories and imaginings the salesman sets his sights on Gwendolyn Dodd planning to complete her life by tying up the loose ends of those around her. Her best friend, lover, and the quiet travelling musician who share her home slowly leave, and when there is no one but her and the salesman she is left with what has and could have been.  A harmonization of traditional and physically derived storytelling, No Time for Dreams creates a world of loneliness and joy in the same instance.

barking birds theatre formed an ensemble in which four of the five members trained in the Humber Theatre Performance Program and have come together to create original work based in their unique multidisciplinary training.  The show features live music composed and arranged by ensemble member Phillip James Psutka. The piece itself originated from letters; in a way all of these characters and their stories are true. The company started collecting the words of strangers, family, friends, sometimes even themselves, and through these fragments characters and stories emerged.

No Time for Dreams is co-directed by barking birds theatre artistic directors Elsbeth McCall and Tanya Rintoul (both also acting in the piece) who started their company after working together on various projects throughout their theatre school career. Ms. Rintoul was part of The Next Stage Festival production The Grace Project: SICK!  which has recently been Dora nominated for Best Production and Best Performance (the ensemble) under the theatre for young audiences category. The ensemble also includes Giacomo Gianniotti, Phillip James Psutka and Ben Muir who played the lead in the History Channel’s recently released Storming Juno plays the role of the Salesman.

For anyone who has ever believed in or doubted the existence of true happiness, No Time for Dreams explores life and the choices we make everyday that lead us on a path to…well we don’t really know, do we?
