Halcyon Youth – Toronto Fringe 2011 Press Release

From press release

The neighbourhood kids challenge you to a game of street-hockey!

Variation Theatre has taken over the playground at the Shaw Street School. Come out to the playground and challenge the students to a game of ball-hockey. The audience will actually participate in the game, with a different prominent member of the Toronto arts community joining the audience team each day.  All profits from this show will be returned to the Givins/Shaw Junior Public School, for programs that need funding. Juice boxes will be served at the end of each game, win or lose.

This is a site-specific show that was developed with the help of the students and the School Council.  Each show is a completely different and unique experience.  Variation Theatre was founded to create site-specific work, with a focus on audience integration and the engagement and involvement of youth. Variation Theatre is a new project from Michael Orlando, a founding member of the Toronto company – the Theatre Lab.

Variation Theatre Artistic Director, Michael Orlando has recruited a group of students from the Shaw Street School and members of the Toronto arts community (Colin Edwards, Omar Hady, Michael Luckett, Jordan Pettle, Michael Rubenfeld).

This is Variation Theatre’s inaugural production, before this Michael was involved in four productions with the Theatre Lab, at different times as writer, producer, actor and director –  building a loyal audience within the independent theatre scene.

During this year’s Toronto Fringe, be sure to be a part of this show.  Help raise some money for the school. And remember what it was like to be a kid again, to play until the streetlights came on.
