The Taming of the Shrew runs during the Toronto Fringe from July 5‐15, 2012 at the Victory Café Upstairs, at 581
In The Taming of the Shrew, the mercurial Petruchio, played by James Wallis, marries Kate, the foul tempered “shrew” for which Shakespeare’s play is named, played by Julia Nish‐Lapidus. On September 9th, 2012, less than two months after The Taming of the Shrew closes at Toronto’s Victory Café, James will wed his real‐life lady‐love, Julia, right here in Toronto.
In doing so, the pair will enter a lifelong union of art and love, following in the footsteps of so many lovers who practice the craft of theatre. Julia, co‐founder of the consistently exciting Theatre Caravel, completes James, the founder of Shakespeare BASH’d in a profound way. Their real‐life union brings together two incredibly passionate and talented theatre artists, informing their performances of Kate and Petruchio with the detailed minutiae comprehended only by those who live their lives together.
Says Wallis, “I always wanted to stage a production of Shrew in a bar. I love the idea of players
interacting with patrons while they eat and drink. We want to create a truly immersive theatre
experience that will excite the audience and allow for them to connect with Shakespeare in
personal way, while they can imbibe their favorite brew. Plus I may or may not have suggested
that Julia play Kate to my Petruchio in a production of this play in a bar on our first date…..I like to plan ahead”.
