Smart Food – Toronto Fringe 2012 Press Release

From Press Release

Smart Food is a must see!

Everyone has something to hide, a “skeleton in the closet”, but who actually has a skeleton? Smart Food is a clever, absurdist one act play surrounding FLORENCE and his love-hate relationship with his best friend Frasier, a plastic skeleton.

Smart Food was first performed at the U of T Drama Festival in 2009, collecting two best performance awards as well as best production. In the process of rehearsal Frasier the skeleton has truly become a third cast member, sometimes giving powerful performances and even some diva moments. This production of Smart Food has focused on showing the gears of performance; to let the audience in on the experience. This has allowed the performance to go back to the basics, it isn’t a spectacle because of its bells and whistles; it is a spectacle because of the innate beauty of human interaction played out on stage.

This is Ray-Alan’s second production as the writer and director of a play, having had his play No Wrongs No Rights performed with critical acclaim in London, Ontario. Andy Ingram plays the role of Florence, the angst filled man-child at the center of this play; Andy is accomplished in stage combat with awards to prove it. Playing the role of the older sister Donnie, is Kelsey Jenkins, a young, talented actor, recently finishing a tour with Big Kid Entertainment.

Beyond the absurdity of romancing with a skeleton, Smart Food opens the conversation regarding tuition hikes, the plummeting education system and never changing unemployment crisis in North America that has been a main source conversation of the media today. With a mix of genres of both comedy and drama, Smart Food is a must see this Fringe Festival.
