See below for details on each show, how the contest works:
A Funeral for Clowns
From press release: Nobody likes a funeral, and most people don’t like clowns. A Funeral For Clowns is what happens when a dysfunctional family with painted smiles and big red noses get together to say their last goodbyes to one of their own. If you’re interested in exploring the varying ways in which we mourn, whether it’s through addiction, anger or sleep‐deprivation, this show is for you. If nothing else, you’ll come away with the understanding that A Funeral For Clowns is no different than a funeral for the rest of us.
A Funeral For Clowns is written and directed by the same collaborative team that produced the BEST OF FR!NGE show for 2011 Fringe Kids, The Travelling Salesman & His Magical Suitcase of Desires. NOW Magazine gave it 4 N’s, mentioning Marcel Dragonieri who was “perfect as the manipulative, rapid‐spieling con artist”. The cast also includes 2009 Fringe 2‐Man No‐Show’s (NOW‐5N’s, Critics Choice) Isaac Kessler, recently nominated for the 2012 Canadian Comedy Award.
This piece plays at The Annex Theatre. Performances: July 06 01:15 PM, July 07 07:30 PM, July 09 05:00 PM, July 10 12:30 PM, July 11 09:15 PM, July 13 09:45 PM, July 14 11:00 PM
Gay Nerds
From press release: Toronto-based Misnomer Productions is launching a play and companion web series about a trio of gay nerds prone to comic misadventures in the vein of popular television shows and movies.
Summer 2012, and nerd is the word. Television shows like Community and The Big Bang Theory celebrate the socially maladjusted, while films like The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spider- Man transform comic book obsessions into big box office returns. But with the overall profile of the nerd on the rise, a segment of the subculture has been left out in the proverbial cold — namely, the gay nerd!
This piece plays at Factory Theatre Mainspace. Performances: July 04 10:30 PM, July 06 05:15 PM, July 08 03:00 PM, July 10 04:45 PM, July 12 04:00 PM, July 13 07:30 PM, July 14 04:00 PM
Grey Ground
From press release: Molly (Caitie Graham) has attacked someone. She is a loner, a loser, and now a monster. Pushed to the point where only primal instinct remains, on what side will she find herself in a world where everyone listens, but no one really sees?
Beasts of the Theatre is an emerging collective focused on the exploration of human triumph through social struggle, and is ready to rattle the cages of convention at this year’s Toronto Fringe Festival with the world premiere production of Grey Ground. Blending traditional dialogue based theatre with choreographed movement and physical storytelling, this captivating new play examines the animal that lives inside all of us, and for its writer Lindsay Finnie, acts as a vessel for personal healing and is a reflection of the strength of action she wished she had had.
This piece plays at The Helen Gardiner Phelan Playhouse. Performances: July 05 10:30 PM, July 06 03:00 PM, July 08 05:00 PM, July 09 04:30 PM, July 10 08:15 PM, July 12 02:00 PM, July 13 07:00 PM
Mahmoud
From press release: MAHMOUD is an irreverent & hilarious one-woman show about an aging Iranian engineer-cum-taxi driver, a fabulously gay Spaniard, and a young Iranian-Canadian girl, all trying to get by the day-to-day grind in the city that they call home: Toronto.
Iranian born playwright/performer TARA GRAMMY (White Rabbit, Red Rabbit, SummerWorks/Necessary Angel/Volcano) invites us to watch as these characters’ stories intertwine over the course of an hour, and through their connections with the audience, themselves, and each other, they explore the themes of displacement, immigration, home, and culture.
This piece plays at Tarragon Theatre Extra Space. Performances: July 04 08:45 PM, July 07 01:45 PM, July 08 01:15 PM, July 10 03:30 PM, July 11 11:00 PM, July 13 12:00 PM, July 14 08:45 PM
Soulo
From press release: The world premiere of SOULO is presented by SoulOTheatre, Tracey Erin Smith’s company that teaches actors and non-actors how to use material from their own lives to create short solo theatre pieces. A collective creation by The Soul Circus Collective, directed by Smith, SOULO is a magical soul-circus featuring three hilarious queer-identified men sharing their personal stories of love, loss and how cross-dressing saves lives. SOULO has its own float in Toronto’s upcoming Pride Parade on July 1.
Mckenzi Scott (the female ring leader) along with Marco Bernardi (nominated for the 2010 Tim Sims Encouragement Fund, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre’s Homo Night in Canada), Terrence Bryant (Almeda Theatre’s The Refugee Hotel, Theatre Passe Muraille’s My Fellow Creatures) and DJ Edwards (a character comedian and Drag Queen who has performed at Second City, Yuk Yuk’s, and more) star as a sparkly funny-boy turned guardian angel, Terry the Fairy saved by applause and a Gorge-ganic Queen who devours convention and poops glitter. 3 different men, 3 unique soul stories and one message: You are the one you’ve been waiting for.
