I did not expect to be entertained by a 15 minute play in a shed, but, thankfully, life consistently surprises me! Red Bedroom Theatre’s production of Adam in the Alleyplays venue at this year’s Toronto Fringe Festival, is a sharp exchange between two characters performed by two up-and-coming performers.
I should mention that I particularly enjoy performances that challenge traditional notions of the ‘stage’ and the audience/viewer boundary, and I kind of get off on that feeling of chaos when my brain is asking: what… is happening right now?!
If you’re not into these types of challenges then this may not be your bag. I sincerely did enjoy myself though so I recommend you to give this one a shot, and just go with it. It’s a production that is bridging performance art with theatre. You will be given seemingly disparate props to hold and then asked to enter a small shed and stand within inches of two scantily clad women.
What you will bear witness to is the character of Eve (played by Kayla Childs) and Adam’s first, condemned partner Lilith(played by Alexandra Augustine) square off in a 15 minute banter. I think that the contemporary analysis of the Adam, Eve, and Lilith dynamic is kind of well-trodden territory but I think these two have written fresh dialogue, and I felt there were really effective exchanges between the two.
These two performers are up-and-comers to watch. I was maybe one foot away from Childs’ face the entire performance and she didn’t break character once. I was little further away from Augustine (maybe five feet), but she held her own as well in such an intimate setting. So, I don’t mean to judge your life, but I know you have 15 minutes. Why don’t get yourself down to this shed and see two strong performers hash out some ancient affairs?

I loved this one, too! These girls were dynamite. It was pouring rain in the shed when I saw it and that added to the drama and humour and beauty of the piece.
oops, i meant “on” the shed–not in it! :)
