Soulpepper, Mirvish and Canadian Opera Company lead noms for the 38th Dora Awards
The Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA) revealed the nominations for the 38th Annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards at a press conference early this morning. The Dora Awards seek to recognize excellence in the Toronto performing arts community. This year’s ceremony will take place on Monday, June 26 at the Elgin Theatre and will be hosted by prolific Toronto actor and musician Raoul Bhaneja.
Some highlights: Soulpepper leads the nominations in the General Theatre Division garnering a staggering 23 nominations, while Mirvish came away with a whopping 14 nominations in the Musical Theatre Division (8 for Come From Away and 6 for Matilda: The Musical). The Canadian Opera Company dominates in the opera and musical theatre/opera divisions with 27 nods for five different productions this season.
The 2016 Pauline McGibbon Award for excellence in an early arts career was given to Toronto-based set and costume designer Joanna Yu. The winner of this year’s George Luscombe Mentorship Award is Marjorie Chan, Artistic Director for Cahoots Theatre, and The recipient of the 2016 Leonard McHardy and John Harvey Award (LMJH Award) is Mitchell Marcus, Managing Director of The Musical Stage Company (formerly Acting Up Stage Company).
Congratulations to all the nominees! Here’s a full list of all the nominations, with links to our reviews for easy reference:
