Review: [Title of Show] (Angelwalk Theatre)

By Amber Landgraff

[Title of Show]

Angelwalk Theatre’s presentation of [Title of Show], playing in the Studio Theatre at the Toronto Centre for the Arts, is a self-referential romp of a play.  Having just spent two years completing my Masters degree I was sure that the words self-referential were words that I never wanted to hear again.  Lucky for me, [Title of Show] proves just how fun being self-referential can be.

The plot of the show is simple.  It follows friends, Jeff and Hunter, as they struggle to write an original musical in just three weeks.  The musical that Jeff and Hunter decide to write follows friends trying to write an original musical in just three weeks.  Is your head spinning yet? Review: Shawn Hitchins is a Single White Douche

By Amber Landgraff

I went to see Shawn Hitchins is A Single White Douche at the Buddies in Bad Times Theatre on Friday.  Buddies has such a fun, friendly atmosphere, so going to see shows there is generally a lot of fun.

When I walked into the room it seemed like everyone in the room knew everyone else.  It was loud.  It was boisterous.  There were drinks.  Before Shawn Hitchins even got on the stage people were in a great mood.  That kind of atmosphere is contagious. Window On Toronto, Soulpepper’s latest Lab series, was completely surprising and totally charming.  I was caught off guard by how much I enjoyed it.  I went to see the show with my friend Simon and we both found ourselves laughing, along with the rest of the audience, for the whole whirlwind 50 minutes.

The show’s premise involves looking at a busy Toronto street from the point of view of a hotdog vendor.  The audience joins him as he interacts with a cast of wacky characters.  As another audience member stated upon leaving the show, “I’ve never seen anything like it!”

Uncle Lindy's Quit Yer Snivelin' Tour of Life

When I joined a group of about 15 people in the courtyard of Factory Theatre for the 9 PM showing of Uncle Lindy’s Quit Yer Snivelin’ Tour of Life, one of three walking tours offered as part of this year’s Summerworks Theatre Festival’s Summerwalks, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect.

Uncle Lindy promised to take us on a tour of our own psyches.  A spiritual walkabout that would have us emerge on the other side with a better understanding of ourselves and our place in the world.  It seemed a tall order for a $5.00 60 minute or under walking tour.

A Heartbreaking Walk of Staggering Genius – 2010 Summerworks Review

A Heartbreaking Walk of Staggering Genius

With a title like A Heartbreaking Walk of Staggering Genius I must admit that I was expecting Daniel Sadavoy’s walking tour, one of three walking tours offered as part of this year’s Summerworks Theatre Festival’s Summerwalks, to border on the sublime:  something so painful that it is beautiful.

I like the concept of a walking tour around the sites of someone’s breakup history.  The idea that a person’s experiences in sites around the city can imprint a history onto those locations is a beautiful thought.
