[Sponsored Article] The Great American Trailer Park Musical at Hart House Theatre

Hart House Theatre in Toronto is kicking off the 2011/2012 season with the Toronto premier of The Great American Trailer Park Musical, a satirical romp that pokes fun at our American neighbours.

From the press release  “The Great American Trailer Park Musical is a tongue-in-cheek, rockabilly romp filled with strip clubs, hysterical pregnancies and dreams of the Ice Capades.  With kidnapping, love triangles and canned tan lines, we’re talkin’ trashy – trailer trashy.”

The show carries a warning – contains mature content, coarse language, and partial nudity. Sounds great.  I’ll be there! It sounds like a great way to spend a fall evening.

Review: Lab Cab Festival

In summer, for me, if feels as if Toronto theatre starts with Fringe, moves on to Summerworks and then kind of fizzles out. That’s because, until Sunday, I hadn’t been to the Lab Cab Festival. Now I wish I could travel back in time (I’ve been watching Dr. Who) and go to the previous five festivals.

What a fabulous way to wrap up the summer.  In 3 and a half hours I saw 2 films, 3 plays, 2 readings, 4 music groups, and 4 art exhibits. And that was about a third of what was available. Continue reading Review: Lab Cab Festival

Thumbs Up Theatre Toronto is waiting for you

Belinda of Thumbs Up Theatre

All 530 – and counting – members.

Thumbs Up Theatre Toronto is a Meetup group bringing folks together to head to the theatre.  It’s the brainchild of Belinda Sutton from North York. She loves going to the theatre but doesn’t like to go alone. Her friends were busy or not as interested in theatre as her. For about a year she searched online to see if there was any kind of theatre-going group in Toronto but couldn’t find one.

One evening she decided to start her own group on Meetup. She did the whole thing, including choosing a name – sometimes the hardest part – in that first evening.

Luminato 2011 Review: Tout Comme Elle (Necessary Angel and Luminato)

Luminato commissioned the translation and production by Necessary Angel of Tout Comme Elle; billed as “a fusion of movement, text and song examining the unique relationship between mothers and daughters”.

It’s difficult to describe Tout Comme Elle. It’s a 90 minute production featuring 50 actors from Toronto, all on stage throughout the entire show. At a guess I’d say they range in age from their mid-twenties to their mid-sixties. Some are just starting their careers, some are established as performers and some are Canadian theatre legends.
