Double Double (Caterwaul Theatre) – 2010 Toronto Fringe Review

By Amber Landgraff

To tell the truth, when I dragged myself out of my apartment this evening (it’s hot, it’s so hot) I was feeling a little fringed out.  But then I got to Theatre Passe Murialle for Caterwaul Theatre’s performance of Double Double and I was glad I went.

The show starts with Jenny’s return home from her first year of university.  Jenny’s parents raised her to always do the right thing, and her time away for university, despite a rocky start, only solidified that desire.

But the first summer home from university Jenny has to decide for herself what the right thing to do is by sifting through all kinds of conflicting information.  And it’s getting even weirder because all of a sudden there are multiple Jennys running around town, and they all seem to have different ideas about what the right thing to do really is.

As soon as the lights came up to show Jenny running away from a slow motion pack of angry people I knew that I was going to enjoy the show.  It continued with high energy and over-the-top scenarios for the full 60 minutes.

Double Double is not about any one particular cause, but about the importance of being well informed about the causes that you choose to support.  Jenny discovers that running half-cocked, full tilt, and willy-nilly into a cause may not always be the best option.

If you have ever flirted or wanted to flirt with student activism then you should check out Double Double.  It’s both smart and funny.
