MAHMOUD is an irreverent & hilarious one-woman show about an aging Iranian engineer-cum-taxi driver, a fabulously gay Spaniard, and a young Iranian-Canadian girl, all trying to get by the day-to-day grind in the city that they call home: Toronto.
Iranian born playwright/performer TARA GRAMMY (White Rabbit, Red Rabbit, SummerWorks/Necessary Angel/Volcano) invites us to watch as these characters’ stories intertwine over the course of an hour, and through their connections with the audience, themselves, and each other, they explore the themes of displacement, immigration, home, and culture.
At once hilarious, insightful, and irreverent, MAHMOUD takes an exacting look at the political policies that hold immigrants as second class citizens, homophobia within the Iranian community, and the media-created stigmas surrounding Iranian culture.
Originally under the guidance of Chalmer’s Award-winning playwright LEAH CHERNIAK (Theatre Columbus), Pandemic’s 2012 Fringe production will be mentored by an outstanding host of talent, including four-time Dora Award Winner SOHEIL PARSA (Modern Times Stage Company) as consulting director, and OMAR HADY (Homegrown, SummerWorks 2010) as choreographer.
Directed and co-written by TOM ARTHUR DAVIS, co-writer and director of Pandemic’s fall 2011 smash hit, Murder on Ossington, hailed by critics as it played to a SOLD OUT three-week run.
MAHMOUD will mark Pandemic’s Fringe Festival debut, but will shortly be touring to the NYC Fringe in August 2012.
