Review: The Reluctant Dragon (Cabbagetown Theatre Co.)

Toronto based Cabbagetown Theatre’s The Reluctant Dragon is a delightful song and dance performance that parents and kids will absolutely love

The Reluctant Dragon is a kid friendly modern adaptation of St. George and the Dragon by the Cabbagetown Theatre Company. In this story, twins stumble upon a terrifying dragon who is not at all what they expected. Performed in a small chapel across from Riverdale Farm, the play makes good use of Cabbagetown’s community charm.

Dusk Dances 2013 dazzles in Toronto’s Withrow Park

Dusk Dances 2013 Carmen Romero

Every year I make an effort to head over to Withrow Park to see what fun new works are happening at Dusk Dances. This year features some excellent performers and choreographers like Carmen Romero, Kloetzel&co., The Throwdown Collective, Denise Fujiwara, and Susie Burpee with Tiger Princess Dance Projects.

Before the rain set in for the evening I got to speak to the Festival Director, Sylvie Bouchard, between meetings and makeup calls. We chatted about how the tour was going. Bouchard told me that the works shown at Withrow Park are different than the ones on tour. Withrow Park is where the pieces get their start. The works shown in Toronto are all either new works or newly adapted for the outdoors. After being shown here, they get the chance to go on tour the following year. Trip (MCM Productions) 2013 Toronto Fringe Review

Trip | Toronto Fringe

I will admit I was not looking forward to Trip by MCM Productions, which is playing at the Annex Theatre. After seeing this one man show the old proverb “don’t judge a book by its cover” immediately comes to mind.

The Late Night Tonight Show LIVE in the Morning with CHICKA BOOM! (Chicka Boom) 2013 Toronto Fringe Review

Chicka Boom | Toronto Fringe

What would happen if two funny ladies with feminist agendas took over a late night talk show? That is what I went to find out when I saw The Late Night Tonight Show LIVE in the Morning with CHICKA BOOM! at the intimate back room at the Free Times Cafe.  For starters I found out it was not two funny ladies but nine, and they rocked it. The Adventures of a Professional Corpse (Bent Spoons) 2013 Toronto Fringe Review

prof corpse

I waited in anticipation outside The Tarragon Theatre to see The Adventures of a Professional Corpse presented by Bent Spoons as part of the Toronto Fringe Festival. Adventure, goofiness, tomfoolery, it is all in the title. Heading into the theatre I expected at least some those different scenarios.

With hopes high, I walked into the main space at Tarragon to find the stage littered with ladders transformed into all sorts of different props. I knew this was going to be a DIY production, maybe a diamond in the rough. Continue reading The Adventures of a Professional Corpse (Bent Spoons) 2013 Toronto Fringe Review
